Engaging by Stages in the Teachings of the Buddha
In his work Engaging by Stages in the Teachings
of the Buddha, the great Tibetan master Phagmodrupa
(1110?1170) sets out the Buddhist path with
the utmost clarity. For the first time, this seminal treatise is now available in English.
Phagmodrupa illustrates the sequential stages of
entering the Buddhist path: placing trust in the
spiritual tutor, taking refuge, meditating upon love
and compassion, and attaining the three bodies of
the Buddha. He recounts the knowledge of spiritual
teachers such as ?antideva, cites historical references,
and employs logical analysis. With great
insight, he describes the behavior of worldly people
and how one needs to change in order to achieve
spiritual enlightenment. For all
these reasons, this work is particularly relevant to
the modern reader.
A biography of Phagmodrupa, also contained
herein, provides insight into the life and work of
this important master. He was the main disciple of
Gampopa and the primary teacher of Jigten Sumgön
(Drikung Kyobpa), the founder of the Drikung
Kagyu.
The edition contains two translations from the
classical Tibetan text of Engaging by Stages in the
Teachings of the Buddha, along with a translation
of Phagmodrupa?s biography from a modern Tibetan
collection, all of which were completed within
the Translation Training Program at the Drikung
Kagyu Institute in India. The original Tibetan texts
are included as well.
